Dreaming of Greece

Over the weekend, my husband and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary. Hard to believe that one year has gone by already! Last September we went on the most fantastic honeymoon to Greece, so feeling a little nostalgic we celebrated our anniversary with dinner at a local Greek restaurant here in Toronto – Mamakas Taverna. This is the closest menu that we’ve found comparable to the food we had while travelling in Greece.

The meal was delicious as always and we were able to take our time and enjoy everything while Poppy slept in her baby seat. We’re trying to take advantage of this luxury while we can because once she is mobile, we likely won’t be going out for these kinds of meals for a while.

Clockwise from top left: Taramosalata, Baklava with Milk and Honey Ice cream, Cheese Saganaki with figs and walnuts, Roasted Mountain Tea Brined Chicken, Grilled Octopus over Santorini fava puree.

On our honeymoon we visited several places but our favourite by far was Mykonos and we can’t wait to take Poppy there. The beaches are beautiful, the people are wonderful, food is fantastic….it’s pretty much paradise. One of our favourite places was the Vioma Organic Farm and Winery where we stopped for a fresh lunch of bread, cheeses and salad along with some wine pairings.

The absolute best meal we had on honeymoon was in Santorini at Metaxi Mas, this cute taverna on the side of a mountain. This place was packed every night so you need to call and get a reservation which you can usually get 1-2 days in advance. We visited at the end of high season so this likely varies depending on what time of the year you go. We loved this place so much we went back a second time during the week we spent in Santorini!

My husband and I usually like to go to new places on each vacation so there aren’t many places that we could see ourselves going back to over and over again. I have to say that Mykonos is the exception, we are looking forward to going back soon and also visiting some new Greek Islands.
