The ‘Cleaner’ Product Challenge Part 2 – Body and Hair Products

Welcome back for part 2 of the Cleaner Product Challenge, if you missed part one that can be found here. This post will cover the body & hair care products and as before I will summarize the list for those who like to do a quick scan and then you can read below for a more in depth review of each.

Body Products

  • Kiss My Face Whenever Shampoo
  • Andalou Naturals Argan & Sweet Orange Conditioner
  • Andalou Naturals Mandarin Vanilla Vitalizing Shower Gel
  • Briogeo Blossom & Bloom Ginseng + Biotin Volumizing Spray
  • Pacifica Island Vanilla Body Butter
  • Lavanila The Healthy Deodorant

Kiss My Face Whenever Shampoo

This shampoo actually came up as a suggested alternative when I scanned in (the Think Dirty app) my previous shampoo which scored a 10 (yikes) and Kiss My Face is an easy brand to find, my local grocery store carries it. First thing I noticed is that the shampoo smells really great! It’s a fresh citrus smell. The product lathers up nicely and rinses away easily. I noticed that when I have no other styling products in my hair, one wash was enough but if I had any other products in my hair then I needed to wash twice to get everything out. It left my hair a little flat so if you are looking for volume then this isn’t going to work but it’s a great every day gentle cleanse for your hair.

Kiss My Face Whenever shampoo scores a 0!

Andalou Naturals Argan & Sweet Orange Conditioner

Another awesome smelling hair product. I was actually quite impressed with this conditioner! It did a great job of of keeping my hair soft. I will caveat this with the fact that my hair isn’t difficult to manage in the first place, it’s fine and straight. Not sure if this would be well suited to someone with course or super curly hair that requires more intense moisture. But if you have straight hair, it’s a good one!

This product scores a 4.

Andalou Naturals Mandarin Vanilla Vitalizing Shower Gel

One of my favourite discoveries to come out of the cleaner product challenge, this shower gel smells like creamsicle! It lathers nicely, rinses well and left my skin feeling clean, soft and refreshed. I can’t wait to try the matching body lotion.

This product scores a 4.

Briogeo Blossom & Bloom Ginseng + Biotin Volumizing Spray

This is sort of a cheat product because it’s not listed in the Think Dirty app so there isn’t a rating for it. However Briogeo’s products are free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, silicones, DEA and synthetic color. All products are 90 to 100 percent naturally derived so it’s safe to say that they likely rate within the desired range.

I was looking for an alternative to dry shampoo. Now, if you are busy and on the go – dry shampoo is your friend, if you have a baby – dry shampoo is your friend, if you just want to sleep in for another 15 minutes in the morning……then dry shampoo is your friend! This was always going to be the hardest item for me personally to replace. This volumizing spray from Briogeo really caught my attention because it’s supposed to help extend the time between washes. Realistically a wet spray is never going to provide as much volume as a dry spray but I was quite impressed at how well this product helped to counter the flat hair I was getting from using the Kiss My Face Shampoo. My hair wasn’t voluminous but wasn’t flat either so this definitely did help! To be fair, the results would probably be even better if you were to use the matching Blossom & Bloom Volumizing shampoo and conditioner along with the spray. Did it actually extend time between washes? It maybe gave me an extra day. I’d look at it as more of a preventative measure vs. typical dry shampoo which is more of a band aid use of fixing dirty hair after it happens.

Final verdict – I like this product a lot. It won’t replace a dry shampoo spray but it does give you an extra day of super soft and clean feeling hair. I’ll keep this as part of my regular routine and save the dry shampoo for occasions when I need to get my big hair on.

Pacifica Island Vanilla Body Butter

I came across the Island Vanilla perfume last year and ended up buying a little rollerball to keep in my bag. If you are a fan of vanilla scents then you’ll absolutely love this! It is pretty sweet smelling which I normally don’t go for but there is just something about this that I really like. The body butter is the exact same scent and a decent moisturizer as well. The product absorbed into my skin quickly and wasn’t at all greasy. The delicious scent lasted almost all day. You probably wouldn’t want to use this with another perfume as it could easily get overpowering. This would be a really nice product for your gym bag or for travel if you are looking to cut down on products and don’t want to carry perfume with you.

This product scores a 4.

Lavanila The Healthy Deodorant

Another product that was already part of my routine, I was super happy to see this score a 0! Most antiperspirants and deodorants have a high rating and are being applied with great regularity to an area that can directly affect your hormones. I actually went on a search for a healthier deodorant a couple of years ago and went through several natural options before finding this one that works so well! The problem with many natural deodorants are that they either don’t work or they feel sticky and gross. The Healthy Deodorant is made with a corn starch base so it never feels sticky. If there is only one thing you switch over to a cleaner version, I would recommend this!

As promised this post is shorter than part 1. I hope you find some useful information especially if you are looking to make your beauty routine a little healthier. Also please let me know in the comments if you have stumbled across any other great natural brands. As people become more health conscious, this category will continue to grow and I can’t wait to see some more exciting products.

  1. Great post Vmo! I was on a quest for a great natural deodorant for a couple of years. Finally found one that isn’t sticky AND works. It is called Schmidt’s deoderant. I found the stick messy, so now use the pots. Will have to try Healthy Deoderant. For all the brands I went through during my quest, that is one I didn’t come across.

    1. Thanks so much! I haven’t heard of Schmidt’s but will look for it and give it a try. The format and texture of natural deodorants are often really weird. And the spray ones just make your armpits wet!
